Construction Process

  1. Plan: Enter build mode on your property. Place foundation outlines.
  2. Foundation: Lay the foundation (stone or wood). This defines the building footprint.
  3. Structure: Build walls, then roof. Wall and roof types affect insulation, durability, and aesthetics.
  4. Interior: Add floors, partitions, stairs, windows, and doors.
  5. Furnish: Place furniture, crafting stations, storage, and decorations.
  6. Utilities: Some buildings need wells, chimneys, or lighting.
Building Tip: Start small. Build a 3x3 hut first (costs ~200 materials) to get shelter and storage. Expand outward as you gather resources. A villa or mansion can take dozens of hours to complete.

NPC Workers & Management

Once you have buildings, you need people to run them. The Bustling World has a deep NPC management system.

Hiring Workers

You can hire NPCs for various roles:

RoleFunctionWage (per day)Skill Needed
FarmhandTends crops, harvests, waters30-50 copperFarming
ShopkeeperRuns your store, sells goods50-80 copperTrading
CraftsmanProduces goods at workshop60-100 copperRelevant craft

StewardManages other workers, reports profits100-150 copperLeadership

Worker Happiness

NPC workers have a happiness stat affected by:

  • Wages: Pay market rate or higher for happier workers
  • Housing: Provide decent housing (not just a bed in a corner)
  • Food: Well-fed workers work faster and produce better quality
  • Safety: Guards and walls increase happiness; bandit attacks decrease it
  • Respect: Higher reputation = workers more willing to work for you
Management Tip: Happy workers produce Fine or higher quality goods more often. Unhappy workers may steal from you or quit without notice. Invest in your workers' well-being — it pays off in quality and loyalty.

Business & Passive Income

Your property can generate income even while you're away adventuring.

Business Competition

Other NPC-run businesses compete with yours. You can:

  • Outcompete: Offer better prices and quality
  • Acquire: Buy out rival businesses
  • Sabotage: Use Shadow Moon connections to... inconvenience competitors
  • Monopoly: With enough resources, dominate a region's economy
Passive Income Tip: Start with a General Store — lowest setup cost, steady returns. Reinvest profits into a Blacksmith or Restaurant. Within a month (in-game), you can have 3-4 businesses generating 500+ copper daily.

City Management

At the highest level, becoming a faction leader or imperial governor unlocks city-scale management:

City Planning

  • Zoning: Designate residential, commercial, industrial, and military zones
  • Infrastructure: Build roads, walls, irrigation, wells, marketplaces
  • Public Buildings: Temples, schools, bathhouses, courthouses
  • Defense: City walls, watchtowers, garrison buildings

Policy Management

As a city ruler, you can set policies in five categories:

CategoryExample PoliciesEffects
MilitaryConscription, FortificationArmy size, city defense
CultureFestivals, EducationCitizen happiness, skill growth
EconomyTax Rate, Trade TariffsIncome vs. citizen satisfaction
ResearchMartial Arts Academy, EngineeringUnlock new buildings/tech
DiplomacyOpen Borders, Trade Agreement, AllianceRelations with other factions
City Management Tip: Balance is key. High taxes = more money but unhappy citizens who may rebel. Low taxes = happy citizens but slow growth. Find the sweet spot (usually around 15-20% tax rate for balanced play).
